This ONE Trick to Rock ANY Dress

By | Ask Tamara, Blog | No Comments

Sometimes dresses do seem to show everything – or get stuck in places – that make(s) us feel self-conscious. They grip on our muffins, they show our tumms, they might even make us feel like that ole back fat is high on display. ALL of the things we’ve been finding solutions for!
I’d never expect (or recommend) that you to wear all those solutions all at once. That’d be torture! What we want is the right tool for the job. Nothing more, nothing less. And this piece will make you feel like a rock star, even if no-one sees it! And there are so many reasons why (check them out below).

There are so many good reasons for wearing a slip:
1. It’s like lead for Superman: nobody gets to see your underwear or your panty line in public – ever.
2. You know when you stand by a good light source and you can see right through your skirt? Not polished, no bueno.
3. They make you feel like a movie star… or a rock star!
Looking well-groomed = looking classy
4. They make you look slimmer! Yes, even without the ‘guts’ of shapewear, because they let your clothes lay smoothly
5. They’re a great investment – you can wear them to bed!

So, if you can see any of these when you have on a dress or skirt…

1. The colour/print of your underwear
2. Your panty lines
3. The outline of your thighs
4. The colour of your thighs and other clothed body parts (OY!)
5. Other contours to which you’d rather the general public not have access

Then get yourself a slip, pronto!

So now that we’ve covered that you really, truly, could benefit from having a couple of these magical primers in your lingerie drawer, let’s figure out what you should look for… just click on that video for my best tips.

The Goods on Granny Panties

By | Ask Tamara, Blog | No Comments

I know I’ve been talking an awful lot about knickers lately. Like air, water, and cell phones, underwear is such a ubiquitous part of life that they often aren’t discussed. Unless of course, you’re here. I mean, I’ve really been getting into your pants (and skirts, and dresses…)!

There are so many different options out there, so many shifting trends, not to mention the ever-evolving lingerie lingo. From hipsters to boy shorts and bikinis, from thongs to g-strings each style has a function for your wardrobe. But, there’s one style who’s reputation causes pause and carries the stigma of being the most unmentionable of unmentionables….

THE BRIEF ON GRANNY PANTIES
Briefs, aka ‘Granny Panties,’ have suffered in reputation for quite some time. But when it comes to providing high-waisted, full-seated, seamless coverage and comfort there’s no other style with as much reliability or experience! Poor Granny Panties. They just want to help!

In fact, I share some pretty startling facts about the war between the two gangs: Thongs Vs The Granny Panties that will have your figure “lifting butt and staking claims” on some space in your lingerie drawer! These babies do it all in one easy piece – and they can make you feel like you’re in Dirty Dancing too (or at least they make me feel that way!).

So let’s get over it already and get rid of those squeezy-inny tell-tale thong VPL that stops you from wearing your slinky dresses. Move those low rise bikinis over just a sec, so we can keep our tummies feeling firm and held in our pencil skirts.

There are specific fit factors and materials that will help you make these to work for your bod. I share them with you in this video.
CLICK TO WATCH NOW and leave me a comment to let me know what you think!

I bet by the end of this one you’ll be putting a few pairs of these Grannies on your Spring/Summer shopping list because they can be light, comfy, seamless, and laser-cut to go under all your light linen and cotton skirts just as much as they can be retro-inspired, sexy-as-all-get-out any time undies.

Oh, and hang on ’til the end there too. What won’t I do for you?

Buh-Bye, Chafing Thighs!

By | Ask Tamara, Blog | No Comments

Call it what you want: thigh chafing, chub rub, kissing thighs, bike burn…
At the end of the day there’s only one way to describe it: A hellish, firey, super frustrating source of aggravation that drives us BONKERS!

I mean truly MAD! Who wants to deal with this nuisance every day when all you really want to do is wear a skirt for crying out loud?

That awful, sinking, annoying feeling doesn’t do much for the ‘easy-breezy’ demeanour you’re going for in that swingy retro summer dress. But this is something you shouldn’t have to suffer through. I’ve seen all kinds of ‘creative solutions’ that sound good at the time but end up making things worse. Things like:

  • bike shorts
  • mens’ boxer briefs
  • lotions, creams, and powders (remember that episode of Friends with Ross and the leather pants? yeah, we don’t need ‘thigh paste’ either!)

Seriously, I have a FAR BETTER SOLUTION for you to make those swingy, carefree dresses and skirts comfy and breezy – and yours again!

What makes this solution SO great is that they:

  • Get rid of all manner of lower bod lumps ‘n bumps
  • Smooth out waistlines
  • Obliterate any chance of VPL (Visible Panty Line)
  • Keep you airy, dry, and feelin’ fresh as a daisy!

A little somethin’ extra? You gotta know that one of my favourite brands for these light-as-air undies is Thigh Society. They have a few styles and colours and you can shop online!

Keep Calm & Pack a Carry-On: 7 Days in NYC

By | Ask Tamara, Keep Calm & Pack a Carry-On, Organizing, Uncategorized, Women | No Comments

The joy of travel! I’ve been prepping clients for their summer vacations, and now I’m getting ready for my own week-long trip to The Big Apple!

The questions is, if you visit ‘the city that never sleeps’, do you need twice as many outfits? (Scroll down to check out infinite outfits with only 14 items!)

The answer: maybe, but even so – we can absolutely get everything into a carry-on, and here’s how:

Keep Calm & Pack a Carry-On Tips:

  1. Build around 3 colours: 2 neutrals & 1 colour, or 1 neutral & 2 related colours
  2. Pack only items that can serve double- or triple-duty
  3. Reduce your ‘need’ for shoes!
  4. Bring spot remover & a mini laundry detergent
  5. Remember: if you forget something you can always buy a stand-in!

That’s IT! That’s ALL!

Want to see it in action? Let’s go to The Big Apple for a week…

Keep Calm & Pack a Carry-On: 7 Days, 14 items

These 14 items go from day to night, and from downtown to uptown on a walking & dining trip.

1 pair of patterned jeans, over 4 outfits.

A pair of patterned denim is an unexpected & thoughtful approach to a dressing around a basic.

1 striped skirt, over 12 outfits

A striped jersey skirt can go from basic to funky depending on the pieces that support it. Extra bonus: wrinkles never cling to jersey knits!

1 spangled skirt for day and night

A piece with a little pizzazz enlivens a week-long wardrobe. This funky print is made sophisticated & cool when paired with easy-going jersey tanks.

A jersey dress serves every occasion with ease.

You could really ONLY pack this & be perfectly happy ALL WEEK! Double-duty dress/tunic, double-dute day/night. This dress is a perfect packing piece.

Ask Tamara: “Can a Petite Flower Rock a Maxi?”

By | Ask Tamara, Try This Trend, What to Wear Wednesdays, Women | No Comments

I recently posted a couple of blogs all about Maxis (check them out What to Wear Wednesdays: It’s HOT! and What to Wear Wednesdays: The Maxi Dress). While these dresses and skirts can be floaty summer answers to otherwise stiff pencil and A-line bottoms, the lengthy nature of the piece can create a number of figure-flattery challenges. A question that came up almost immediately was:

“Ah, but can a petite flower rock the maxi skirt? Any caveats?”

As a petite fleur myself, this is a question near and dear to my heart. Yes, I do have some guidelines that will allow a person of the 5’4″ and under set to successfully wear a Maxi style and they all revolve around… Fit.

FIT: It’s the key for anyone wearing anything, but it’s particularly important for Maxis. When a Maxi is perfect it will:

a) Show Some Toe: Shorten your hem to about 1/4″ – 1/2″ from the ground when you are wearing the shoes that go with your outfit. With every horizontal line, the body is visually shortened. Show some toe, and maybe some forefoot, but refrain from a sharp line across the ankle or pooling on the floor (if you shorten your skirt to go with heels, please don’t wear it with flats!).

Tweet This:

Trademark Tip: Don’t be a drag! Hem a Maxi 1/4-1/2″ from the floor & for the shoes you’ll wear. Do you show some toe when standing? Perfect!

b) Hug the Waist: Just like a perfect pair of pants, the waistband of your Maxi should fit well, yet allow you to tuck in a thin top if you wish. Skirts that float around the waist can twist and turn when you walk, and slip too low when you sit down.

c) Just Enough Fabric: A Maxi overpowers when it is too voluminous, and looks skimpy if it’s stretched across the hip or rear. Material should flow across your curves without adding bulk or pulling. Try to grab a fistful of fabric on both sides or at the rear. Lots available? The hips are too broad. Not an inch to pinch? Try going up a size.

Still not sure? Here are a couple of advanced tips to help make you look like a tall(er) glass of water:

1. Asymetric Hems: The aptly named short-long hemline has been big for a few seasons, and it’s sticking around for more. This ‘mullet’ of a skirt is shorter in the front and longer in the back giving you the best of both worlds.

2. Side Slit: A slit to the side of the front of your skirt can elongate the leg and make walking easier in a narrower style. Just make sure the slit is no higher than 2″ above the knee.

What to Wear Wednesdays: It’s HOT!

By | Ask Tamara, What to Wear Wednesdays, Women | No Comments

Whoo! It’s Hot in Here! We are FINALLY in the hot days of summer, and it’s times like this when the question on everyone’s lips is: ‘how can I look professional in this crazy heat when all I want to do is wear NOTHING!?’  Actually, the more interesting question I had this week was:

“Tamara, I have a maxi skirt that I live in on weekends. How can I wear it to work without looking like I’ve mentally skipped off already?”

Most people reserve long skirt lengths for formal and weekend wear, but then there are many for whom long lengths are a daily preference or requirement. For everyone, the way to create a professional look with a long skirt is to be mindful of fabric choice (lightweight, opaque, with some drape – not stiffness), volume (low, no ball gown styles or multi-layers), and colour combinations (keep current, not ‘uniform-y’ by mixing neutrals with trend colour accents).

A long skirt is also a chic way to enjoy keeping cool outside, but staying temprature-regulated the A/C is on high in the office, and it can greatly extend the usefulness of a summer piece you may have already invested in!

Ask Tamara: Statement Necklaces

By | Ask Tamara, Women | No Comments

You know we love great jewellery in any season, but statement pieces are so on trend this year that it’s the perfect time to explore the different lengths of necklaces exist.  With so many options, how do you choose the right one?

From chokers to extra-long necklaces, there is a perfect piece for everybody – and for any outfit.

Ever wondered how to choose the right length? In the above image, you’ll see can see how different necklace lengths look, or ‘sit’, on an individual.  Here are some do’s & don’ts for each length:

14” – choker
DO wear chokers with tops that show off the neck.
DO embrace this latest necklace trend because it is all over popular retailers.
DON’T overdo it with a super blingy choker, it’s likely to be a one-hit wonder – unless your Style Vocab dictates otherwise.
DON’T go too tight! Make sure you can easily swallow by sneaking one finger between your neck and your choker.

 16” – crewneck and 18” – jewel necklace
DO invest in good pieces. Jewel length is the most versatile length, you’re sure to have it a long time.
DO
wear a pendent on these lengths with a V-neck (or ‘cheat’ a V-neck over a round neckline), or choose a rounded version to wear with rounded necklines.
DON’T look choked up by adding it to a high neckline.
DON’T forget to add personality with pendants!

 20” – scoop & 24” – deep scoop
DO choose these lengths to elongate your neck.
DO highlight these pieces by wearing simple tops with them.
DON’T wear with plunging necklines. Hey…eyes up HERE.
DON’T
be afraid to layer these necklaces. The complexity is fantastic!

 30 to 33 – extra long
DO wear with high necklines, to create drama and elongate the torso.
DO
try doubling or tripling these lengths to add versatility to your accessories.
DON’T forget to layer these necklaces for a great multi-strand look.
DON’T wear long super long necklaces if you are petite as they can overwhelm your figure.

Try This Trend: Floral Prints

By | Ask Tamara, Try This Trend, Women | No Comments

This Spring is full to the brim with new trends that are seem just a little bit trickier than in past seasons. But, with a little inspiration, these Tricky Trends can be reined into some of your favourite Spring/Summer go-tos. Need a nudge in the right direction? No problem. Here are a few ways to wear one of the trickest trends this season: floral.

If the words ‘floral print’ give you a little Laura Ashley ‘acid reflux,’ I would totally understand. But, it’s time to revisit them this year in a completely new way. As a neutral print on a narrow pant, florals look graphic and modern, while in a technicolour print, they bring a daring element to a classic cut blazer.   We want to share a couple of floral print looks with you to hopefully inspire you to try this trend!

Ask Tamara: Boxing Day Tips

By | Ask Tamara | No Comments

Tomorrow is Boxing Day!  Who’s going shopping?  After years upon years of working retail on Boxing Day, and then experiencing the unadulterated joy of being able to go shopping on Boxing Day instead, I have some pretty hard-core tried and true Boxing Day Shopping rules. Or laws. Whatever.  Follow these guys tomorrow and enjoy a remarkably stress-free shopping day! Bon chance!

Tamara’s Boxing Day Shopping Laws:

  1. The Pro Goes Pre- or Post: Shop prior to, or after, Boxing Day. Typically sales start prior to Christmas, particularly for clothes and cosmetics.  Save day-of Boxing Day shopping for stores that do major door-crashers: Big Box electronic stores, appliance and furniture stores, some boutique retailers, etc.
  2. Wrapped Up In Chains: Large clothing chains rarely promote extra special savings for Boxing Day anymore, but check online to see if there are any ‘surprise savings.’
  3. Use the Full Week: If you’re really itching to shop the after-Christmas sales, try going a day or two after Boxing Day.  Have you noticed that retailers are extending the sales into ‘Boxing Week’?
  4. Shoesies are a Doozy: Never shop for shoes on Boxing Day.  There’s no reason to go into stores where crazed, dehydrated people are wielding stilettos at your head when the sales will still be on tomorrow.
  5. Can’t Try? Say Good-bye: Fitting rooms are usually packed or closed during this busy shopping day, so be prepared.  Wear clothing that is easy to try clothes on top of: leggings, slim t-shirts, etc.
  6. HYDRATE: Bring water, easy snacks like trail mix or dried fruit, and ibuprofen.  You’ll need it! 😉
  7. The Early Bird Gets the Worm: The earlier you start, the better. Parking lots and public transit will be packed!  Don’t forget about those folks who wake up with the rooster to line up at their favourite store before the mall opens! Yikes!

Have a beautiful holiday, everyone!  We’d love to hear all about your Boxing Day purchases tomorrow.  Tweet us!

Ask Tamara: How to Dress for a Holiday Party at Home

By | Ask Tamara | No Comments

The annual office parties, cocktailers, and dinners out are always fun (and expected) this time of year, but not all entertaining happens at a banquet hall or restaurant.  Sometimes, the best holiday venue is at home!

I love low key Holiday and New Year celebrations. There’s something about setting a cozy mood and gathering your loved ones around – nothing compares! If you’re having guests over, or will be a guest at someone’s home for a holiday gathering, make sure to treat it like the occasion it is! What a heart-warming honour to be included in a get-together during the festive season!  Putting a little thought into an outfit can go a long way to showing your guests, or hosts, how much you appreciate spending time with them.  Forego the ‘Ugly Christmas Sweater’ for an outfit that’s comfortable, with a little festive flair (re: sparkle, shine, or a play on jewel tones), to put ‘the icing on your gingerbread.’ Here are our picks to take you from brunch to dinner-in this season:
